A delivery challan is a critical document for businesses that transport goods without an immediate sale. Under GST (Rule 55 of CGST Rules), a delivery challan is required whenever goods are moved for reasons other than supply — including job work, branch transfers, goods on approval, and exhibition purposes.
When to Use a Delivery Challan vs Invoice
- Job work: Goods sent to a job worker for processing and returned after completion
- Branch transfer: Moving goods between your own warehouses, branches, or godowns
- Goods on approval: Sending goods to a buyer who may accept or return within 6 months
- Exhibition/demo: Goods taken to trade shows, exhibitions, or for demonstration
- Repair/testing: Sending goods for repair, quality testing, or inspection
GST Compliance for Delivery Challans
- Must be prepared in triplicate (consignee, transporter, consignor copies)
- Serial numbering must be consecutive and unique per financial year
- E-way bill required if goods value exceeds ₹50,000
- Goods on approval must be converted to invoice or returned within 6 months
